Every great book stands on older ones. Homer gave Virgil his wanderings and his war; Virgil walked Dante through Hell. Bring any book to the centre: what it draws on is to its left, what draws on it to its right.

Of its time
Its heirs
Milton reworks Hamlet's language of performance: where Hamlet resolves to 'put an antic disposition on', the Son in Paradise Lost 'can put on' God's terrors.
Stephen Dedalus is Hamlet as much as Telemachus: a mourning son in black, haunted by his mother. In the library episode he lays out his theory of the play, that Shakespeare saw himself in the ghost, the father, rather than the prince.
