Every great book stands on older ones. Homer gave Virgil his wanderings and his war; Virgil walked Dante through Hell. Bring any book to the centre: what it draws on is to its left, what draws on it to its right.

Dostoevsky's early novella is his most Gogolian work: a timid Petersburg clerk, a comedy that turns into nightmare, and a subtitle, 'A Petersburg Poem', that echoes Gogol's calling Dead Souls a poem.
Pnin's flight from Waindell in his old blue sedan, at the end of the novel, recalls Chichikov's escape by carriage at the end of the first part of Gogol's Dead Souls, a book Nabokov wrote about.
