Faust
A great book. First published AD 1808, written in German
Faust is a tragic play in two parts by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, usually known in English as Faust, Part One and Faust, Part Two, based on the German folk legend Faust. Nearly all of Part One and the majority of Part Two are written in rhymed verse. Although rarely staged in its entirety, it is the play with the largest audience numbers on German-language stages. Faust is considered by many to be Goethe's magnum opus and the greatest work of German literature.

Mikhail Bulgakov, AD 1928
The novel opens with lines from Goethe's Faust, about the power that always wills evil and always works good, and its devil, Woland, takes his name from Goethe's Mephistopheles. Margarita, who strikes a bargain with the devil for love, is Bulgakov's Gretchen.
